The Knowledge of the Holy: A Follow Up (Part II)

AnalogFilmIf you’ve been following along, you know we just concluded a 23 day series reading A.W. Tozer’s “The Knowledge of the Holy. One of the things I’ve noticed on my journey has been that when believers take some concentrated time to study God’s attributes, they don’t like stopping. This can be good or bad, depending on what is going on in the heart of each individual believer.

“Bad? How can it be bad?” you ask. Well, the answer is that if all we ever do is study the attributes of God, we can slowly give our hearts over to the subtle lie that having more information is the same thing as knowing God. In our Western, consumer-driven, data-focused culture knowing the facts about God can pretty much convince most people that they actually have a relationship with Him.

The truth is, knowledge inflates us with pride, but love builds the church. If understanding God’s nature increases our love for Him, then our study is a success because the church is built up as individuals draw nearer to Christ. But if we grow in our head knowledge but never bend our knee, surrender our heart, or draw close to God’s burning heart, then we have only become more like the Pharisees. We must guard ourselves from these tendencies.  And we have to ask ourselves, “How Much Input Do You Need?

With that said, reading more than one book isn’t a bad thing. So for those of you who have enjoyed our study in “The Knowledge of the Holy,” I thought I would point you to a few more resources that I hope will be helpful if you find yourself wanting to go deeper in these areas.

The Attributes of God

The Attributes of God - PinkThis is a great study written by A.W. Pink (don’t ask me why two guys with the initials A.W. wrote books on the nature of God). Pink was a pastor and a theologian who wrote a number of books and claims Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones as one of the people who learned from him. While he wrote a number of books, this one in particular focuses in on the nature of God through the lens of His attributes in a very similar way as “The Knowledge of the Holy.”

The Existence and Attributes of God

The Existence and Attributes of God CharnockThis book is written by Stephen Charnock, a puritan who lived in 17th Century England. He was a minister who preached to several different congregations during his life. His claim to fame is this book, which was assembled from a series of addresses that were given prior to his death. Charnock was never able to finish the addresses, but what was completed can be found here. When people at my Bible college gained a hunger for knowing more of God from “The Knowledge of the Holy,” they inevitably bought a copy of this book. But I warn you: This book is a mammoth book and is not for the faint of heart.

The Pursuit of God

The Pursuit of GodI thought this book might be a good follow up, not because it covers the same ideas as “The Knowledge of the Holy,” but because it is Tozer writing about what is required of the man who wants to pursue God. In a way, for the person who is firm in God’s nature but wants to put into practice what he or she understands, The Pursuit of God is a practical help to encourage hearts to truly encounter Jesus.  I would highly encourage you to pick this book up.

My wife’s copy of “The Knowledge of the Holy.” It was already kind of in bad condition. Our series made it worse (err…more loved).

Wow, we finally did it. If you haven’t been following along, “it” is finishing up with our journey through “The Knowledge of the Holy” by A.W. Tozer. I’ve done one other long-term event on this blog but this one was a lot of fun and it definitely grew and engaged our readership. I’ve always thought of this blog as a community, and that in no way is going to change in the future. But because of the growth in people following the blog and the growth going on spiritually in individual people, I think it’s important to reflect on whats happened, what’s changed, and what the path is going forward.

First off, though, I just want to say thanks. Whether you have been a long term reader or you started along the way with us through this study, your participation and patience as I journaled through each chapter was greatly appreciated. I was talking with one of our readers the other day and mentioned that if no one else grew from this study, I definitely did. I needed to go through this book more than I was aware, so even if you just put up with me posting more than you wanted, thanks! But for those who did participate, for those who commented, and for those who shared, thank you so much. I would do this study with or without people showing up, but having people share and comment has certainly been an encouragement.

Secondly, in the coming days, I hope to provide some additional content for those who want to go deeper in the study. A common thing that happens when people really engage in who God is is they desire to understand more and there are definitely avenues for that. Also, the last two days of studying the book, a couple of our commenters posted some excellent ideas for follow up. I expect to put together a post that highlights those as well.

Also, I think it will be good for us to talk about who has joined us in this process. There have been about forty or so new followers for this last month. I don’t know how many of them are legit (WordPress has some kinda spammy tendencies once in awhile, so it’s hard to be exact) but I know a majority of them are. And I’m excited about that and the ability to grow in the discussion we’ve already been having. However, our content is probably different enough pre this series compared to the series itself, that I think it’s important to talk about where we go from here.

So again, thanks for sticking around. I hope the next few days are helpful and can focus us on growing in our knowledge of God and what’s doing in the body of Christ.

How do you wrap up a study like this? So far we’ve talked about the knowledge of God, why the pursuit of it is necessary and possible, and looked at no less than nineteen attributes of God among many more.  Where do we go from here? The answer is, we launch out from this foundation into our own personal journey. Knowing God at a deep level has immense implications and must be walked out, not just contemplated in order for us to be effective.

The critical need of this hour of history, just as when Tozer first penned the words we’re reading, is for the church to become what she’s been destined to be. And the only way for the church to come to life like she needs to is she must know God. This is not some kind of casual knowing like the way you know your accountant. The church must know her God in a way that transforms her from the inside out.

The difficulty comes in the fact that knowing God does not come from study alone. As much as I’d like to think this reading, blogging, and study has been helpful, it will only be profitable if we take what we’ve learned and apply it to our lives.  Obeying and walking out these truths is the highest form of learning.

Tozer calls this the pursuit of the open secret. It’s a mystery so deep that it has eluded scholars, wise men, and the mystics of the ages. Yet, God hid this secret right out in the open for all to see. Tozer also calls the pursuit of the knowledge of God the easiest and hardest thing we’ll ever do with our lives. It’s the easiest because God’s word is a fountain of revelation and He is more than willing to shower the riches of Kingdom on anyone who asks (Isaiah 55:1). But it’s the hardest because our nature resists pursuing Jesus and we must discipline ourselves for this pursuit of knowing God.

Tozer gives us six key take aways that we must commit to if we want to grow in our knowledge of Jesus. To be clear, these are only positioning ourselves, they do not earn us privilege with God.  But if our hearts have been struck by this journey and wish to go farther, we must do the following:

  1.  We must forsake our sins. Everything that hates religiousness in us will resist this step. But Tozer quotes Jesus who clearly says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God, ” (Matthew 5:8).
  2. We must utterly commit our whole life to Christ in faith. Tozer quickly adds what this looks like: “keep His commandments, carry our cross, and love God and our fellow men.”
  3. We must welcome the inflow of the Holy Spirit. This can’t be said enough times and since the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of [God] (Ephesians 1:17), then it only makes sense that this step is crucial.
  4. We must hate the world and it’s values. This doesn’t mean we hate the people of the world, but that we count as worthless the value system this world holds so that we can pursue what God values. If we become a friend of the world, we make ourselves God’s enemy (James 4:4) and that will not aid us in knowing Him more intimately.
  5. We must practice long and loving meditation on the majesty of God. And while this can look very pious and religious, at the end of the day, we need to train our minds to think about Him (Colossians 3:1-2). As we do, our hearts will grow in the ability to look on Him with wonder.
  6. All of these things combined and an increase in our true knowledge of God should cause us to serve those around us with more love. If we don’t, not only will we not be profitable, but our actual knowledge of God will be suspect.

I don’t have much to add other than this process is important. As I said when I first announced this journey, this book and the truths inside have had a profound impact on me and many others. Because the truths contained are from the Bible, they have great power to stabilize and equip believers who put these words to use. And it’s only in putting them to use that we truly show we have understood them.

The same leader who introduced me to this book also went on this pursuit many years ago. I listened to him speak once and he shared how he had come to understand Proverbs 2:1-5 as a pattern for growing in the knowledge of God. So I’ll end with by quoting that scripture:

My child, listen to what I say,
    and treasure my commands.
Tune your ears to wisdom,
    and concentrate on understanding.
Cry out for insight,
    and ask for understanding.
Search for them as you would for silver;
    seek them like hidden treasures.
Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
    and you will gain knowledge of God.

What should we think about a God who is infinite, eternal, unchanging, and all-knowing? Do we think that He can be opposed? Can anyone stop Him from having His way? At the end of our time in the Knowledge of the Holy, after hearing about all of the attributes of God and delving into His nature, we come to the place where we have to consider, who can resist His rule? And if someone can, how is that possible? These are the thorny questions that must be answered in order to understand God’s sovereignty.

God’s sovereignty is His ability to reign without being resisted. This by necessity means that God is totally and 100 percent free.  We know very little of being totally free. We as Westerners insist that we are free, but forget to quickly in our inter-connected world that the use of our freedoms results in conflict. This conflict proves that we are not truly free, not totally unencumbered by resistance.  God has a kind of freedom not dependent on anyone else.

To understand this, we don’t need to look any further than Psalm 115:3: “Our God is in the heavens; He does all that he pleases.” The implication is that God, in His greatness, has no one who can resist Him.  And because of this, obviously, things go the way that He chooses. Tozer takes the time to highlight two questions that rear their heads whenever we begin to discuss the fact that God reigns: 1) Why do things that God hates exist if God reigns? and 2) Can humans resist God’s will and if not what are the implications of that?

The first question is easy to answer. Tozer spends time comparing Christianity to another religion where there are two gods, one good and one evil. They both exist and are unleashing good and evil simultaneously. They are both gods, but neither are sovereign for one resists the activities of the other. No such thing exists in Christianity. Instead, we can look at the Bible and see that God has permitted sin to exist. Because sin exists, it changes the world in a way that God would not have it. In His wisdom, this is a choice that God has made, even if we don’t understand why. Some day we will and we will glorify Him for it.

The second question is more complicated. If God is sovereign, then isn’t every human only doing what God wants? And if that is true, then how can man be held accountable for something God willed him to do? Here Tozer delves into the Calvinism/Armenianism debate and tries to reconcile both camps with an analogy of tourists aboard an ocean liner. The people aboard have freedom to choose what they do, but the ocean liner will still depart and arrive at the same place. Tozer paints God as in charge of the macro events and leaving the micro events up to our personal decisions.

And while I love Tozer and have grown greatly from reading Him, this is the one point where I disagree with Him. He seems to in fact almost verbatim recount an argument Paul anticipated: “You will say to me then, ‘Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?’  But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?” (Romans 9:19-21).

Much could be said about this conversation and I would bet millions of hours have been spent on the internet debating these realities. I think a few things should and can be said: No man can come to the Lord unless the Lord is drawing Him (John 6:44), so God exercises His sovereignty here. And yet, somehow in the mystery of the ages, God calls us to make a choice to follow Him and holds us accountable for not choosing Him (Matthew 7:13-14). God isn’t being unfair or evil, He is sovereignly moving to save us from a fate we couldn’t save ourselves from. There will be punishment for those who don’t choose. And some how, through the mystery, God will be sovereign and we will be the benefactors.

I do agree with Tozer though about the need to choose Jesus. This reliance on God’s sovereignty can never produce apathy. Instead, it should produce great confidence in God. We have a God with the power to move the hearts of men. He doesn’t just try to convince men unsuccessfully, He moves them. And because we serve a God as powerful and free as our God is, we should be bold and vibrant in our walk and our message. Jesus has the power to affect the hearts and wills of men. This is good news we must take to heart.

Holiness is something we don’t even like to talk about any more. In our contemporary understanding of religion, holiness is the creepy old uncle of Christian virtues. Its the one we all understand a little bit but very few of us want to actually talk about or show to others.  This obviously comes from decades of church history where legalism was called holiness and we are in an age where people want to be anything but religious. But holiness, as I hope we’ll see, is the farthest thing from legalism.  Holiness is the sign of the life of God in the soul of men and this is the reality we all desperately need.

It would be hard for us to get too far into a discussion of God’s holiness without stopping to remember the story of Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet of God. He prophesied the true and accurate word of God for five whole chapters before he had an experience that changed his life forever. He had an encounter with God. In this encounter, Isaiah is taken before the throne of God and sees the Lord. He hears the burning angels around the throne declaring the ultimate holiness of God to one another.  And it’s in this ecstatic vision that, though Isaiah had prophesied for five chapters already, he is struck with the sinfulness of his life and particularly the sinfulness of his lips. Isaiah needed a clear vision of God in His holiness before he could truly understand his utter sinfulness. This not only caused an acknowledgement of sin, but also a cleansing and a sending. It utterly changed the direction of Isaiah’s life.

Tozer tries to explain God’s holiness, but it’s obvious that it must come by revelation. It’s not something that a man can just explain. He must see it. So Tozer calls us away from futile activities like imagining the most holy thing you can think of and then taking it up another two or three notches. God’s holiness is not shared with anyone. Neither is there a standard of holiness that God must live up to. Instead, what God does is the definition of holiness.  He is holy in whatever He does and what He does becomes our definition of holiness.

And because God is holiness Himself, He has made holiness the “moral standard” of health for the entire universe. God knows that His ways are best and that anything outside of His ways will destroy and degrade man and his environment. This is why the rebellion of mankind tainted the universe and unleashed death and decay. And this is why whenever you see systemic revival of the church and awakening in a society, the environment itself undergoes significant transformation. In order for God to preserve His world, He must actively war against that which harms it and this is why God unleashes wrath against sin on the Earth. “The holiness of God, the wrath of God, and the health of creation are inseparably united.”

Tozer goes on to remind us that God is holy with an infinite holiness that has no degrees. This is a holiness we can never hope to achieve.  But there is a relative type of holiness that God calls His people to participate in. It comes through the cross and by God imparting it to us. And though these words may not be popular with society at the moment, God still says to His church “You shall be holy, because I am holy,” (1 Peter 1:15-16). None of us will claim true holiness, but in light of God’s command, we have to soberly set out on a journey to grow into His image.

How do we do this? Tozer has some recommendations: Stare at God. Become utterly fascinated with Him and who is He is in His holiness. We become what we look at. So if we stare at Jesus and worship Him in truth, we will become alive from the inside in a way that makes us holy. We also must hide in Jesus. This means naming and repenting of our sin and committing to have no righteousness outside of Jesus. It’s His blood that cleansed us that is the basis for our holiness.  As we do these two things, we also allow the Lord to discipline us so that we can grow in His holiness. These three attitudes change us and transform us into a person that is more like God every day.

Today, I’m burdened. I’m burdened by the fact that so much of the church thinks that God’s holiness is just legalism. I hate that the church thinks that holiness is just old-fashioned and prudish. In reality, God’s holiness is burning, shining brightness and glory. It’s full of life and burns away the cancer of sin that chokes out life in a believer.  The most fully alive human beings I have ever met have tasted a little bit of God’s holiness and it has changed them forever.

Friends, we need more Isaiahs. We need more men and women who have had a profound encounter with Jesus and have seen Him in His holiness and glory.  One glimpse–just one–will strip away every ounce of needing to be cool or well thought of. It will shift our agenda from our own to His. It will unleash prophets who again will declare the things of God.

It’s not just the world who needs conviction of God’s holiness. Much like Isaiah, the people who need to see God’s holiness is us.  We talked for a lot of chapters, friends. But are there things about ourselves and our nation(s) that we can’t even see until we see Jesus in His holiness? We need to begin to ask God for more vision. As we do, we will see real life overwhelm the plastic lives of legalism and sin.  We will see more cleansing and more sending.

And that is the need of the hour. The Knowledge of the Holy.

Stop for a second and think about the attributes of God we have discussed so far: one-ness, self-existence, self-sufficiency, eternity, infiniteness, mercy, grace, etc. While all these attributes are awe inspiring, without love, they can at worst be terrifying and at best leave you tepid. Who wouldn’t be fearful of a God who is everywhere, eternal, unlimited, and all-knowing if he was a loveless being? And even if you have such a being who is merciful and full of grace, but doesn’t love you, you’re left with a cold relationship based on your loveless god’s pity. Love is the part of God’s nature that sets Him apart and makes Him desirable.

We have to be careful though. Many, as Tozer has pointed out, have taken John’s statement “God is love,” and have turned that phrase to mean “love is God.” The result has been anything that seems loving, some have turned and worshipped as God.  But generic love is not God, but God is full of sincere and fervent love. While “love” has been used to describe just about anything humans do, God’s love acts as God does. Everything He does is done with love.

This love that we experience from God manifests in many ways.  Love wills the good of another, so when true love from God rests on our heart, we are able to live without fear because “love casts out fear,” (1 John 4:8). When our knowledge of God’s love and His sovereignty are perfected, we are able to live fearless lives confident that His love will mean our good. God’s love also reminds us that He desires friendship. The fact that God has set His love on us means more than just He is a good person. It means He desires relationship. With you. There are staggering implications to this. Finally, love means that the person who loves takes pleasure in the person He has set his affections on. God is fully pleased with you. There is no more need to try and please. You are as loved as you are ever going to be.

Finally, Tozer reminds us that love never lies dormant. It’s always moving. It’s always extending itself to the one it loves. And this is true of God. Jesus told us “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends,” (John 15:13). And in the cross and since the cross, no one has laid down their life for us more than Jesus.  He sacrificed Himself for us, He is always praying for us, and leading us in laying our lives down.

One of the things that makes the topic of love so important is that Christianity is really the only “religion” that is based upon a relationship of love with it’s God. Talk to any Muslim that you know and they don’t really have an understanding of a God who loves them. Many of the other religions have many gods or no god who very seldom enter into relationship. It’s only in Christianity that God has the heart of a Father toward His children. Human beings were made with a need for love. Our need for love was ultimately designed to be fulfilled by God. We remain empty until we receive it.

And this is why it is so critical that we understand God as a God of love. Christianity lived out of a place of encountering God’s love is electric. It changes a person. But Christianity lived outside of experiencing God’s love is like a clanging symbol. It means nothing to the world and frankly it’s irritating. It’s a code of ethics with no cause that changes no one. But when we are touched in our hearts with the warmth of God’s love, it melts our cold hearts and makes us alive on the inside.

When we experience this love, it changes us. Fire begets fire on this walk that we are on and we begin to live out the same principles of love that God has shown us. We will the go want good things for others, we extend friendship to them, we give of ourselves. The worlds finally gets to see people alive from the inside, living out the message of the cross. The result will be stunning. It’s what the world is waiting for.

Grace. It’s a word we use so often we sometimes forget what it means. In the last five years of church history, the word has taken on a whole new dynamic. There are men that are called “hyper-grace” believers and there are others being called legalists for not emphasizing grace enough. And if we’re not careful we can talk much about a word we barely understand, all the while thinking we totally understand part of God’s nature.  Because grace is something that God is, our understanding of it is essential in this hour.

Hang with me here. Because I know that on Friday we talked about God’s mercy. And while Tozer (and I) will acknowledge that in God these two attributes are one, they are experienced in our humanity in slightly different ways. Mercy is God in his goodness confronting our guilt. But grace is God bestowing benefits upon undeserving people.

Picture the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). He has squandered his father’s inheritance and has realized what a terrible wrong he has done. He then returns home to a father, unsure of his father’s reaction and willing to be a slave just to survive. When he returns home, a watching father runs to his son while he’s still a long ways off and embraces him. The son repents. Now we know the father forgives this son. This was mercy. But when the father sends for the robe, the ring, sandals, and the feast, this is grace. Grace is what causes God to take us from the ash heap and seat us with princes (1 Samuel 2:8).

As I’ve pointed out before, Tozer likes to remind us of the foundation he has already laid in previous chapters. Because God is eternal and immutable, it’s not as if God suddenly developed grace as a part of His nature in response to our need. Instead, God has had grace in His nature since before the foundation of the world. Men in the Old Testament received grace. The sacrifice of Jesus has always been pointed to as the channel of this grace. And men and women since the New Testament have been recipients of grace.  All of this comes through Jesus, who was looked forward to in the Old Testament and who has been looked backward on since His death and resurrection.

We do well to remember, as well, since grace is part of God’s nature, it is also infinite. There is no end to God’s grace. Tozer compares God’s grace to our need. Picture mankind’s great sin. If all of them were to be numbered, it would seem innumerable. And yet, Scripture makes it clear, where sin abounds, God’s grace abounds much, much more (Romans 5:20).

One of the things that I love about grace that we forget is that we don’t deserve it. Usually we don’t forget this when we are asking God for grace for ourselves. We usually remember this very easily. But we do forget this when we are dealing with others. Grace is God giving us what we don’t deserve. GRACE (as some have very nicely described it) is God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. We get access to this by the free gift of Jesus’ life and death and resurrection. And so when we’re dealing with others, as those who have tasted God’s grace, we should be gracious, giving beyond what people deserve. This is the question we need to ask ourselves: Has my life been a picture of God’s grace to others?

At the same time, we should understand that grace is not given as a license for sin. Yes, we can sin and be recipients of grace. Sinning happens. But true recipients of grace are not content to take advantage of grace. Because grace is access to God’s riches and power to overcome sin is part of God’s riches, we should be quick to use grace to overcome sin. Paul, who was accused of being hyper-grace in his day, said “Should we go on sinning so that grace may increase? No!” (Romans 6:1-2). Grace, in the economy of God, for a person who is constantly late is a watch that they could not afford. Grace empowers, it doesn’t entitle.

And so my encouragement today is for you and I to become hungry to receive and know God’s grace more than we already do. Let’s enjoy the ring and the feast that our Father has brought to us.  Let’s show that grace to others who still think their father only wants slaves. But lets also use the grace given us as more than just an excuse for sin. Let’s use it to overcome those things that have held us back. Let’s truly experience real grace and show it to others. .
