A Short Meditation on Meditation (or Psalm 1)

tree by streams of water

I’ve been thinking a lot about the life described in Psalm 1 lately. Particularly I’ve been asking God to make me the man David describes as blessed by God. David describes this man In this way: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” (Psalm 1:3 ESV) Here are a couple of quick thoughts about this state of blessedness David describes:

•Meditating on the word of God is the means to rooting ourselves in God.  Any thing that directs you away from God’s word is not directing you to streams of water.

•This man is fruitful, but not in the constantly busy, over-worked sort of way. The fruitfulness is seasonal. He is not concerned when it isn’t the season for fruit. He knows seasons change and fruit comes and goes with the seasons.

•Because he is rooted, his leaf doesn’t wither. He is stable in seasons that are dry. We are to be rooted and grounded in love (Ephesians 3:17) and that means when circumstances are dry or difficult we still are drawing from an unseen and unending source.

So given the awesome promise God gives us here, can I ask you, cajole you, beg you, or admonish you to grab your Bible and began to put your roots down in its pages and meet the living God there?
